Carstens Projects recently completed a stunning renovation at the 5-star Wild Mushroom Boutique Hotel, set in the heart of the vineyards surrounding Stellenbosch.
Our brief was to transform an existing structure, previously fitted as a high-tech facility for cultivating mushrooms, into a luxurious poolside honeymoon suite. In keeping with its original purpose, the name of the suite, the Discosoma Room, is derived from the scientific name for mushroom coral. This soft sea coral, often found in marine aquaria, is native to the Indian Ocean.
The suite, which has beautifully arched ceilings and offers spectacular views of the Simonsberg, Stellenbosch Mountain and the Helderberg panorama, now contains every imaginable comfort, from under-floor heating and a king-sized bed to heated towel rails.
A ceiling-mounted water faucet surrounded by ceiling star-lights has been set above an oversized walk-around bath to add a touch of romance and make an equally bold and unique statement. This concept, an idea of Cape Bathroom and Plumbing Supplies in Stellenbosch who imported the fittings from America, is a first in the South African market.
The renovation was both a worthy challenge and a huge success.
